I’ve seen one of those before, it was in a junkyard; think it was North Atlanta Pull-A-Part.

Shitty. A friend of mine was killed by a hit and run driver yesterday.

My dad lives in Spokane, I will force him to buy these.

Pretty much all of them are in junkyards. This one has been saved from salvage yards twice.

There are a few 80's cars that I really like and this is one of them.

Is Sterling a re-badged something else?
![]() 08/31/2020 at 17:01 |

yes, a R over 800.

Acura Legend, with worse build quality.

As the OP said, it’s a rebadged Rover 800. And that car is very closely related to the Acura Legend. But Rover did away with the pesky Japanese electronics and upgraded them to Lucas parts and made various other changes to give them British reliability instead of Japanese reliability.
The results were predictable.

Oh yes, upgraded is exactly the correct word. I think there’s like 37 of these things left, I am honored to own and operate a functioning example.

Nice! Those were so cool when they came out. Especially the 5 door. I remember being in a dealer and drooling over one. Was sooo disappointed when they basically turned out to be complete shit. Glad to see at least one survived!

It’s Legend- ary.

*waves back* Hi! :D

Thanks! I wish I was around during the days of the new Sterling, but alas I was not. From what I understand, they were actually pretty hot until, like you said, they turned out to be completely terrible from the onset. My particular car has a really interesting history which I will have to write about at some point (it’s basically been a lifelong destiny to own this car), and the plan is to fully restore it so there will be at least one really proper one in America, forever.

Acura should have made an Legend hatchback too...

I look forward to reading more. Everything I’ve heard is that they’re great to drive.

I was issued a Rover 800 as a company car for a while (until the company shut down the facility and laid me off). Fun car.
I drove it from the UK to Hamburg and back while it was “my” company car. I explored the upper limits of the car’s speed capability while driving across Germany. Th
en I saw what the Dutch police were equipped with to counter speeding G
erman drivers: 911s.

That’s really cool, I’ve always wondered what it was like to drive one new. Do you remember if it had the V6?
Plus, if you’re going to catch speeders a 911 is surely one way to do it.

I didn’t get it new. By picking a used car from the pool, I was able to get a car that was above my pay grade. This was in 1993.
It was probably a year old.
It didn’t have the V6: it had the O or M series 4-cylinder
. I think probably the M-series. It was a fastback,
pre-R17 facelift, just
like yours.
The car surprised me with it
s speed. Its 30-60 acceleration time was excellent for the period.

Head gasket failures, very nice, but they truly are both an understand and underrated machine, it’s sad that so many of these were lost to the Scrappage Scheme or even Cash for Clunkers here in the States.
I’m lucky that mine being an 89 model has the Honda V6 and not the KV6, and I’m convinced that the engine is the only thing holding the car together at this point.
